Who is this hike for?
The hike to La Soufrière is rated level 4/5 — it requires a good level of fitness but no prior mountaineering or high-altitude experience. If you walk regularly and aren't afraid of strenuous activity lasting a few hours, you're ready.
Minimum age: 8 years . Children above this age generally love it — the volcano, the fumaroles and Ivan's stories easily capture the imagination of young and old alike.
Why climb Soufrière with a guide?
Every year, dozens of hikers return disappointed from the Bains Jaunes. They've walked, they've sweated, they've searched for the volcano—and they've stopped at the barriers blocking access to the active zone. For the most spectacular part of La Soufrière, with its smoking craters, fumaroles within reach, and the chasms left by the 1956 and 1976 eruptions, is off-limits to the public without a certified guide, as per prefectural decree.
With Yvan, you'll get past these barriers. He is accredited by the Guadeloupe prefecture (professional card no. 97123ED0094) and provides each hiker with a specific respiratory protection mask to safely approach the sulfurous fumes. He's the one who secures each crossing, assesses the day's conditions, and adapts the route to your group.

- 🧥 Windbreaker/rain jacket: It can get chilly at altitude
- 🍪🍫 Snack (dried fruit): to keep you going until the summit.

- 👙 Swimsuit/towel: relax at the Yellow Baths after the hike
- 👕 Change of clothes to leave in the car
- 🩴 Flip-flops: Once the hike is over, you can finally relax your feet and let them breathe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to climb La Soufrière without a guide?
The path to the Mulets savannah is open to the public. However, the active zone—fumaroles, craters, and eruption sinkholes—is off-limits to the public without a guide authorized by prefectural decree. Without a guide, you must stop at the barriers, a few hundred meters from the summit.
Can the active area be accessed without a mask? No.
Sulfur fumes in the active zone can be toxic. Yvan provides a suitable mask for each participant — it's included in the price of the hike.
What is the price of a guided hike to La Soufrière?
The group hike costs €50 per adult and €40 per child under 14. A deposit of €20 per person is required upon booking; the balance is payable in cash on the day of the hike. Private outings are also available—contact Yvan for a quote.
Is hiking in Soufrière difficult?
It's rated level 4/5. The climb requires effort, especially in the more exposed final section. But Yvan adapts the pace to each group, and no one gets left behind. Good physical fitness is all you need—no need to be a top athlete.

Essentials: 1.5 liters of water, a snack, a windbreaker, good shoes, and a backpack to keep your hands free. A swimsuit is highly recommended for the Yellow Baths on the return trip.
