fumerolle au sommet du volcan de la soufrière en guadeloupe

Experience the nighttime ascent of the Soufrière volcano in Guadeloupe

The departure is at 3 a.m. from the Bains Jaunes parking lot in Saint-Claude. Headlamps are provided — you don't need to bring anything in that regard.

The ascent unfolds in the calm and darkness of the rainforest. We follow the Pas du Roy trail and then the Chemin des Dames, two paths that gradually climb towards the summit. The forest at night has a unique character: the sounds change, as do the smells. It's a climb that invites concentration and wonder.

As we approach the summit, the fumaroles become visible in the darkness. The smell of sulfur intensifies. And then the sky begins to change.

The wait at the summit, at 1,467 meters, is the heart of this hike. The first rays of sunlight gradually warm the horizon. The Caribbean Sea appears. The neighboring islands come into view. And finally, the sun bursts forth, setting the entire landscape ablaze.

It's hard not to be speechless.

Return and swimming

The descent takes place in daylight, allowing you to rediscover the landscapes you crossed in the dark a few hours earlier.

The return journey takes you to the Bains Jaunes car park, where a stone pool, naturally heated by the volcanic activity of Soufrière, awaits you to end the outing in style.
